How is this different from just having backups?

Backups are one ingredient. A recovery plan tells you what order to restore things in, who's responsible for each step, and how long it should take — and it's tested, not assumed.

Do you handle the actual backup software and storage?

We review and recommend, and can manage it directly as part of an ongoing engagement. The planning work stands on its own if you already have backup tooling you're happy with.

How often should a recovery plan be updated?

At minimum, any time a major system, vendor, or team structure changes — we typically recommend a review every 6–12 months even without a specific trigger.
